An issue that crops up with so many fantasy books these days is that they’re standalone, and the fun comes to an end way too soon!
However, the good news is that I’ve found some amazing fantasy trilogies that will keep you reading way into the night and through the entire weekend!
Best of all, the fantasy trilogies I’ll be listing here are already complete, so there’s no painstaking waiting around for the next installment to worry about!
Let’s get straight to it!
1. The Shadow and Bone Trilogy Boxed Set By Leigh Bardugo
Well, if you haven’t heard of this trilogy, where have you been?
The first book in this series was the inspiration for the smash hit Netflix series with the same name, Shadow and Bone. Set in the Grishaverse, it follows the story of Alina Starkov, the Sun Summoner, as she discovers her previously dormant magical powers…
The Grishaverse is a magical land where nothing is quite as it seems, and with the likes of thugs and thieves can come to dominate all, you never know what’s going to happen next. The forces of good and evil are at odds once again, and survival requires much illusion and secrecy.
Alina is prophesied to save the world, but it is no easy task! There’s much action and intrigue, and all with a distinctive under-current of both romance and danger, and it’s an excellent coming-of-age story.
The second book in the trilogy is called Siege and Storm, and in this novel Alina is hunted across the True Sea, outrunning the Darkling as quickly as she can. But it’s not at all easy! The Darkling is more determined than ever, yearning to take Alina’s power and the Ravkan throne.
Meanwhile, Alina falls deeper still into a deadly game of forbidden magic. Slipping further from her humanity, Alina will have to choose between love and her power.
The third installment is called Ruin and Reason, and it gives rise to an epic adventure that sees Alina standing between her country and a rising tide of darkness that could destroy the world.
It’s perfect for fans of Laini Taylor and Sarah J. Maas!
2. Mistborn Trilogy Boxed Set By Brandon Sanderson
People have been raving about this landmark fantasy trilogy the world over. And for good reason, too!
The trilogy begins with The Final Empire, which describes a world of ash and pain, under the dominion of the Dark Lord. Citizens are forced to live in servitude, laboring in fields.
However, a troublemaker comes along, Vin, a young, criminal girl who can use metal for magical powers. There are rumors of a revolt brewing, but can the Dark Lord ever be defeated?
The second book in the series is titled The Well Of Ascension. And it tells the tale of a whole new era. The world needs rebuilding, but with so much change in the hands of power, things are very unpredictable, and Vin finds herself the subject of a new religion as she is stalked by a strange vaporous entity.
The story continues in the third book of the series, in which Vin and others are striving desperately to save the world, rising to a dramatic and shocking climax.
There’s detailed, vivid world building, a compelling plot, and fully fleshed out characters dealing with important themes of faith, loyalty and duty.
3. The All Souls Trilogy Boxed Set By Deborah Harkness
If paranormal romance is your kind of thing, then look no further!
This bestselling fantasy trilogy is now an addictive major TV series. But as everyone knows, books are usually better than their TV or movie scripts!
The trilogy begins with the book A Discovery of Witches, from which the TV series takes its name. The enchanting tale begins when the historian Diana, who comes from a line of witches, comes upon an alchemical manuscript, effectively exposing her to a world of destructive daemons, old vampires and powerful witches alike.
Diana finds herself drawn to a vampire geneticist by the name of Matthew, and together they begin to unlock the manuscript’s secrets, as their feelings toward one another deepen, and the fragile peace of their world begins to fracture.
The second book in the series is Shadow of Night. Following the cliffhanger at the end of the first book, Diana and Matthew embark on a yet more dangerous journey as they seek out the lost enchanted manuscript, when they find themselves plunged into a world of magic and spying.
At the same time, Diana seeks tutorship for her magic and Matthews’ past becomes claustrophobically tight around them.
The third book is The Book of Life, and it’s where things become decidedly more urgent. Combining the likes of both ancient knowledge and modern science, Diana and Matthew must endeavor to find the missing pages of the manuscript before their time runs out.
Their mission takes them far and wide, facing new crises and old foes, and the final book in the trilogy deepens the tale’s themes of power, passion, and above all, consequences.
This bewitching tale is nothing short of captivating, and has wide appeal for fantasy lovers.
4. The Inheritance Trilogy By N. K. Jemisin
In this fascinating tale, there’s an outcast, barbarian heroine, Yeine, in a very unique world…
The first book is titled The Hundred Thousands, and gripping the reader from the first page, Yiene is summoned to a majestic city above the clouds where gods and mortals live as one. Her mother has died under mysterious circumstances, and Yeine learns that she’s a potential heir to the throne.
A vicious power struggle ensues, and as Yeine fights for her life she learns more of her family’s bloody history, and how perilous the world becomes when gods and mortals are bound.
In the second book, The Broken Kingdoms, the story centers around a different protagonist, a blind artist who goes by the name Oree and lives in the city of Shadow. Oree becomes engulfed in a nightmarish conspiracy, where the bodies of murdered godlings are left strewn throughout the city.
The third book, the Kingdom of Gods, revolves around the last scion of the family, Shahar who has a duty to uphold the Arameri family’s interests, but chaos is called forth when a magic that even the gods fear, the Maelstrom, and Shahar discovers whether she can stand with her enemy and lover Sieh.
And that’s not all – there’s also a new novella set in the same world called The Awakened Kingdom, which I can confirm is well worth a read!
It’s the perfect fantasy trilogy for those who love the idea of political intrigue between the likes of mortals, gods, and godlings.
5. Between Ink And Shadows Trilogy By Melissa Wright
This epic fantasy tale is deliciously dark, told with both wit and flair, and delivers a swoon-worthy love interest in the form of a forbidden romance. It has a slow burn enemies-to-lovers trope that has readers rapidly turning the page. It’s also got swords and sorcery, dark magic and magical bargains!
Book 1 is called Between Ink And Shadows, and it tells of the feisty heroine Nimona, who has lost her freedom, thanks to her Dad’s dealings and blood contract with the magical organization, Trust. Determined to get the freedom she yearns for, she’s prepared to risk everything.
Then there’s Warrick. Warrick is a king’s man, who also happens to be looking for a way to be free of the Trust, but such endeavors aren’t as easy as they might be, especially after Nimona turns up.
The second book is Before Crown and Kingdom, and it sees Nimona once again thrust into her contract with the Trust, with her every move closely watched by the eye of the king, who wants her sent to the gallows. But fate has something interesting in store…
Book 3 is Beneath Stone and Sacrifice, and the stakes are even higher – everyone she loves is in danger. There is dark magic rising and time is of the essence – if she doesn’t act quickly, the Trust will rise to devour everything she holds dear.
Intense and action-packed, this series has it all! There’s wonderfully developed characters who the reader will truly feel for. And the adventure leads to quite the conclusion in book 3!
Wrap Up
I sure hope you’ve enjoyed browsing through, and if you’ve spotted titles here that you haven’t already read, I’m pretty sure you’ll be adding one or two of them to your To-Be-Read pile!
It’s kinda hard to pick a favorite here, I guess it comes down to whether you’re more interested in action, political intrigue, or a little paranormal romance…
For action, I recommend The Shadow and Bone and the Between Ink And Shadows trilogies, for romance I recommend The Shadow and Bone and The All Souls and the Between Ink And Shadows trilogies. But for political intrigue, I’d have to recommend The Inheritance Trilogy!
And, that’s a wrap, everybody – happy reading!
