Different Paranormal Romance Tropes

If there’s one thing we love most about the paranormal romance genre is its diversity. It can come in multiple tropes, cross over other genres, and take us on an adventure of epic proportions. 

It’s not even important if you enjoy monsters and mythical creatures. A paranormal romance can be enjoyed by a fantasy lover as well. It will just depend on the type of trope you read. Here are some of the most popular ones:

Magical Academy

One of the most popular paranormal romance tropes today is Magical Academy. We mostly have the Harry Potter series to thank for that, but don’t get mistaken. There were certainly other fictional magical schools before Hogwarts.

What’s more important, though, is its current popularity since it has given us a lot of juicy novels to choose from.

As the name suggests, the Magical Academy trope shows the characters in the story training for their paranormal and magical abilities in a school setting. It usually starts with the discovery of magic. It can come in the form of a paranormal awakening, actual physical transformation, or even a sudden manifestation of power. 

In addition, we also love how a lot of these stories really get into the complications of magic and the paranormal. For instance, one of our favorite novels follows the tale of a purebred vampire. This vampire just discovered that he has a rare and widely coveted ability that, unfortunately, he can’t control yet.

As such, his parents sent him to a special secret academy to master his unique skill. This school is where he then falls in love with another paranormal being with an equally rare ability. We particularly loved the parts that showed how his vampiric lifestyle differs from others. 

Reverse Harem

You have probably heard about the Harem trope, but have you already read a Reverse Harem story? It’s a theme that you will also find used in other genres. However, there’s an interesting boom in popularity for this type of story in the Paranormal Romance genre. 

Reverse Harem tells about a main female character with multiple leading men. It’s clear why you won’t easily find this theme under other genres. 

The romantic relationship between the characters can be too complex in a non-paranormal or fantasy world unless the writer aims to tell a story about polyamory. It’s simpler when you can have your characters permanently bonded somehow, such as through one’s paranormal or magical abilities.

We also love how most of these stories are told as an adventurous romance. The characters usually go on a quest and eventually fall in love through their bonding and experiences.

We also enjoy darker femme-fatale type leading ladies. For instance, in one of our favorites, the female protagonist was a shapeshifting marquess with an affinity for dark magic. She bonded with her male partners using her strong psychic abilities. 

Chosen Ones

Finally, we would be remiss if we didn’t mention what seems to be the most used trope in paranormal romance. It’s a theme that will surely delight a fantasy lover as well. It’s about a main character destined to fulfill something that can potentially change their world significantly. 

The character can come from either good or evil forces and can potentially save or doom the world. The protagonist is also usually equipped with a coveted ability that can or can’t be matched by the romantic partner. 

It’s not uncommon for one of the main characters to feel that they’re not a fitting mate for the lead if they can’t match the paranormal or magical abilities of the chosen one. This type of conflict usually makes the story more emotionally complex, making their romance more satisfying in the end.

Another spin of this trope is where two “chosen ones” fall in love, usually as they’re taking down a corrupt status quo. Meanwhile, there are also stories where the leads come from two opposing forces. We actually like this track in particular since it usually involves a dark lover, or at least someone hot who has mastery over dark magic.

Like the Magical Academy trope, this type of story usually features the complications of magic in their world as well. You can also find this combined with the adventurous romance theme where the characters go on a long journey to fulfill their cause. 

In one of our recent reads, the couple went through a dark underworld to awaken the chosen one’s power. Pretty thrilling, right?

Aside from the various tropes, we also love how Paranormal Romance can create memorable characters. 

Lucas Hunter, Lachlain MacRieve, Pia Giovanni, or anyone from the Anita Blake vampire hunter series are only some of our favorites.
